Diet and Productivity 101: What (not) to eat to optimise productivity

Most people don't even think about it, but food has an enormous influence on our everyday lives. Here are a few tips on how to get more productive just by changing your diet!

Avoid processed foods

Processed foods are EVERYWHERE! They are impacting our lives like never before.

Studies have shown that processed foods are bad for productivity, the brain and can even cause chronic diseases (you can't be productive if you're dead).

A good way to check if a food is processed is by checking the ingredients label.

If there are a lot of different ingredients and there are also a lot of artificial flavours and colours, you should probably think twice.

Instead, you should opt for foods which are more natural, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meat etc.

Reduce refined carbs

Eating a lot of refined carbohydrates results in big spikes and drops in blood sugar, which are bad for both your productivity and your brain.

You can replace them with “good” carbs instead, such as:

  • Non-starchy veggies (spinach, beans, brussels sprouts, celery, tomatoes…)
  • Nuts (peanuts, cashews, walnuts…)
  • Fruit (apples, berries, citrus fruit, cherries, kiwi…)
  • Unrefined whole grains (whole wheat or multigrain products)

Drink lots of water

Your brain is about 75% water. Not drinking enough water can lead to a massive loss in productivity.

Even just 1% dehydration was shown to decrease productivity by 12%.

We should drink about 3 to 4 liters of water every day. Here are some tips to help you achieve that:

  • Drink some water immediately after waking up
  • Carry a bottle of water everywhere you go
  • Eat foods rich in water, such as soups and fruit

Try skipping breakfast

This isn't about changing what you eat, it's about changing when you eat.

Our mornings are really valuable because we are the most refreshed and productive.

Today, most people waste a lot of time eating breakfast. They watch TV or scroll on their phones rather than eat mindfully.

Try skipping breakfast and working instead. See if you'll get more stuff done. Pro tip: if you get hungry, just drink some water!
